Matthew Bryza: There would have been peace at the time, the break point changed everything

He said a peace treaty would be signed soon:

“I believe that if the positive dynamic of the recent meetings hosted by President of the European Council Charles Michel and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken continues, a peace treaty could be signed soon. Keeping French leader Macron away from the discussions will also contribute to a positive process.”

Bryza stressed that a peace treaty could have been signed as early as in 1998-99.

“The most serious threat to sustainable progress was radical Armenian nationalism, which resulted in the assassination of then-Prime Minister Sargsyan in the Armenian parliament in 1999, as well as the removal of former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan from power. That is, in 1998 there were moments when these two Armenian leaders were willing to compromise with President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev.”
