Azerbaijan marks National Salvation Day on June 15, a public holiday associated with one of the most decisive moments in the country’s modern history.

The date commemorates Heydar Aliyev’s return to national leadership in 1993, when Azerbaijan was facing a deep political crisis, growing internal confrontation and the real threat of civil conflict. The early years of independence had brought severe instability, weakened state institutions and serious social and economic difficulties.

Amid this crisis, Heydar Aliyev was invited from Nakhchivan to Baku. He arrived in the capital on June 9, 1993, and on June 15 was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan.

His return marked a turning point for the country. Within a short period, political tensions were reduced, the risk of civil war was prevented and state governance was gradually restored. This opened the way for the consolidation of Azerbaijan’s independence and the formation of stronger political institutions.

The period that followed became associated with the restoration of stability, the strengthening of statehood and the beginning of a new stage in Azerbaijan’s political, economic and social development.

Today, National Salvation Day is viewed in Azerbaijan as a symbol of state continuity, political stability and the country’s transition from crisis toward long-term nation-building.
