Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has instructed the government to use the capacities of neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan, to import a number of essential goods into the country.

According to IRNA, Pezeshkian issued the instruction following a meeting with ministers and the head of Iran’s Central Bank.

“The president emphasized the need to make maximum use of the country’s northern ports, develop alternative trade corridors, and utilize the capacities of neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Russia, to ensure the supply and import of certain essential goods. He also called for the accelerated implementation of relevant agreements in this area,” the statement said.

Pezeshkian stressed that, if necessary, he would personally consult with the leaders of neighboring countries and regional partners in order to remove possible obstacles to the supply and transportation of essential goods and medicines as quickly as possible.

The meeting reviewed the current situation regarding the import of basic goods, medicines and resources needed by the country, taking into account restrictions that have emerged at some southern border crossing points.

According to a report by the economy minister, following consultations with neighboring countries, the capacities of a significant number of land border crossings and alternative transport routes have been activated and expanded in order to facilitate and increase imports of goods.
