An inscription on Ilandagh Mountain linked to the ancient history of Nakhchivan has been discovered after 30 years of searching.

According to Report’s local bureau, the discovery was announced by archaeologist Vali Bakhshaliyev, corresponding member of the Nakhchivan Branch of ANAS and professor at Nakhchivan State University.

Bakhshaliyev said the inscription was found during an archaeological expedition. The text contains information about the military campaign of Urartian rulers Ishpuini and Menua to Nakhchivan.

According to the inscription, they passed through the area of present-day Arazin village and, south of the Araz River, in the land of Pluadi, offered a sacrifice to the god Khaldi.

The archaeologist noted that research shows the Urartian campaigns against Nakhchivan were unsuccessful. An inscription found in Sisian indicates that the Etiuni confederation, which had established itself in Nakhchivan, preserved its independence by paying tribute to Urartu.

The discovery may become an important source for further research into the ancient history of Nakhchivan and the role of the region in political processes in the South Caucasus during the Urartian period.
